Yet another new neon sign — the Tulsa Welding School — is aglow along the 11th Street alignment of Route 66 in Tulsa.
The Tulsa Route 66 Commission posted a photo of the new sign Thursday, just hours after Buck Atom’s Cosmic Curios on Route 66 lighted its new signs.
Here’s another close-up of the sign photographed by Rhys Martin, president of the Oklahoma Route 66 Association:
Tulsa Welding School is one of several businesses that have been a beneficiary of the city’s Route 66 neon-sign grant program that restores old neon or provides cost-share grants for new neons signs.
Others that have received grants are:
- Buck Atom’s Cosmic Curios on Route 66
- Flo’s Burger Diner
- Burnett’s Flowers
- Cities Service Station
- Interparts of Tulsa
- U.S. Studio 66
- Tally’s Good Food Cafe
- Billy Ray’s Catfish and BBQ
- Renaissance Brewing Co.
- Bobby O’s Slices and Pies (sign not yet live)
To top it off, the city is building a small park on the south side of the 11th Street Bridge that will contain three re-creations of neon signs from long-defunct Route 66 businesses in Tulsa. It’s expected to be finished by late summer.
