The two Ted Drewes Frozen Custard stands in St. Louis have closed temporarily after a worker tested positive for the coronavirus.
Ted Drewes expects to reopen both stands sometime next week, including its Route 66 location on Chippewa Street in the southwest part of the city.
The beloved local institution made the announcement Thursday on Facebook:
Ted Drewes was late in reopening for the season this year because of “setbacks” due to the pandemic.
Ted Drewes Frozen Custard began in 1929 near St. Petersburg, Florida, and moved to St. Louis in 1930. The first St. Louis shop was on a long-gone spot on Natural Bridge Avenue. The Grand Boulevard store opened in 1931.
Ted Drewes’ roots on the Mother Road date to 1941, when it opened its stand on Chippewa Street.
