The Route 66 MotorHeads Bar, Grill and Museum in Springfield, Illinois, will celebrate the installation of the “world’s largest Route 66 sign” on Friday evening.
The big event will take place at 6 p.m. Friday when the massive sign is mounted on two 60-foot-tall poles that once held a Stuckey’s sign in front of the business at 600 Toronto Road. Route 66 MotorHeads sits at a former Stuckey’s.
Ace Sign Co. of Springfield is making the sign for MotorHeads. Ace also has restored the Sonrise Donuts and Bel-Air Motel sputnik signs in Springfield, Art’s Motel sign in Farmerville and The Tropics sign in Lincoln.
Ace posted this video of the company making the sign:
Route 66 MotorHeads also contains a plethora of Route 66 memorabilia, including the aforementioned Art’s Motel and Bel-Air Motel signs and items from Shea’s Route 66 Museum in Springfield.
The Facebook post about the sign dedication didn’t mention how big the sign is. However, it has to at least match the massive Route 66 shield that stands in front of the National Route 66 Museum in Elk City, Oklahoma.
Route 66 MotorHeads sits near a later alignment of Route 66, west of Interstate 55 (map here).
