The Adams Street Bridge over the Kennedy Expressway in downtown Chicago will close starting Monday as part of ongoing work on the Jane Byrne Interchange project.
Adams Street is part of the westbound alignment of Route 66 in the Windy City.
Block Club Chicago reported:
The Adams Street bridge, the last of the 11 local bridges to be replaced as part of the interchange overhaul, will reopen in 2022. The new bridge will have two westbound lanes and wider sidewalks, according to an Illinois Department of Transportation news release. […]
Motorists will be detoured south on Desplaines, west on Van Buren Street and north on Halsted, according to IDOT.
Pedestrians are being asked to use the Monroe Street bridge. Bicyclists are being detoured south on Halsted, east on Harrison street and north on Clinton street to reconnect with Adams, according to IDOT.
The detour should be a relatively minor inconvenience for westbound travelers of Route 66.
Work on the interchange already has led to the closing and demolition of the Jackson Boulevard Bridge (eastbound Route 66) over Interstates 90/94, aka Kennedy Expressway.
Construction on that interchange started in 2013. It’ll be nearly a decade old by the time it’s finished.
Then again, the Kennedy Expressway in Chicago seems to be a perpetual construction zone due to its heavy use.
