Missouri Route 66 association may offer special license plate next year

The Route 66 Association of Missouri sometime next year hopes to offer its own personalized license plate through the state so the organization can raise more funding for historic preservation.

The association stated it was inspired by the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona, which started its own specialized license-plate program and earned $230,000 its first year. That robust revenue stream has enabled the Arizona organization to stop collecting membership fees and give out preservation grants.

The Missouri association wrote on its website about its proposed license plate:

The Missouri Route 66 Association will be applying for our very own personalized plate in 2021 and all proceeds will go to the preservation, promotion, and education of Route 66.  The vanity license plate costs approximately $15.00 additional to a normal license fees.
St. Louis native and fellow roadie, Shellee Graham, is graciously providing her talents to help us create the beautiful design you see here.  To make this license plate a reality we need at least 200 Missouri residents interesting in obtaining the plate to add their name to our sign-up list.  This list is then presented to the state showing “good faith” that our organization will commit to the project.
Be the first person on your street with this great work of art on your ride!  If you are interested in making history and want to be a part of this exciting opportunity, please sign up right now at our website!

Missouri residents who are interested can sign up here. The association notes the final design of the plate may be slightly modified because of sizing constraints.

A phone message to the Missouri association’s president, “Roamin'” Rich Dinkela, wasn’t returned.

With the Arizona plate, for every $25 plate sold, $17 goes to the Arizona Route 66 association.

The Arizona plate initially required a $32,000 fee, that the organization be a federally recognized nonprofit organization and that it has an organizational history of 30 years or more. That 30 grand probably was tough to swallow, but it paid big dividends.
