De Anza Motor Lodge wins NAIOP award for mixed use/multifamily category

De Anza Motor Lodge redevelopment project in Albuquerque won the Eagle Award in the mixed-use/multi-family category in the NAIOP New Mexico Awards of Excellence.

NAIOP, which stands for National Association of Industrial and Office Properties, has a chapter in New Mexico.

This is what the organization said about its honor for De Anza, courtesy of the Albuquerque Journal:

The De Anza Motor Lodge is an iconic hotel along historic Route 66 that has been a landmark for New Mexico, Albuquerque, and the Nob Hill neighborhood. It was a trading post for the Pueblo of Zuni, a welcome respite for tourists and local attraction, and has been granted landmark status by the City of Albuquerque. The design of the De Anza Motor Lodge was a balance between keeping the historic motor court motel typology while reviving this Nob Hill neighborhood. The design maintained the motor court concept, but the buildings changed from hotel rooms opening inward to the motor court to modern apartments opening outward. The apartments are energy efficient, have high ceilings, large windows and offer views of the mountains, city and historic Route 66. The massing, scale, color, tones and textures of the project reflect the historic De Anza Motel. An amenity building was built in the center over an existing basement that houses preserved historic Zuni murals.

Anthea at Nob Hill owns and developed the property. HB Construction was the general contractor, and Healty Engineering was the project engineer. The Hartman + Majewski Design Group was the architect.

De Anza is now an apartment complex that offers a fitness and yoga center, outdoor patio with fireplace and grills, and access to a community amenity room that features a movie room, library and complimentary coffee bar.

Charles Wallace, a Zuni trader and Indian art collector, built De Anza Motor Lodge in 1939. The city bought the closed property in 2003, and it needed three tries before it could find a redeveloper with the proper financing to begin the rebirth of the once-moribund property.
