The Village of Tijeras, New Mexico, tonight will open its new Park and View drive-in theater just off Route 66.
The theater at 12 Camino Municipal behind the village hall on Route 66 will screen “Forrest Gump” tonight, with “The Goonies” on March 13. According to the online form to order tickets, both screens already are sold out.
According to the Albuquerque Journal:
“I have been eager to find ways to bring our community together during these trying times,” Mayor Jake Bruton said. “I believe the Park and View will be an exciting way to come together as a community while still following public health guidelines. We are very thankful for our community partners, such as PNM and GCC Rio Grande, for their support to get this event off the ground.”
Bruton told the Edgewood Independent in October said he wanted a permanent drive-in theater, with screenings four times a month. He said at the time he was motivated to do something when so many families were stuck at home during the COVID-19 pandemic.
KRQE-TV in Albuquerque reported the village used recycled power poles to help construct the screen.
Drive-in theaters have seen a big resurgence across the country this year because they can offer social distancing yet still deliver safe entertainment during the COVID-19 pandemic. Drive-ins have been used for everything from concerts to church services.
