The Admiral Twin Drive-In theater in Tulsa will celebrate its 70th anniversary this weekend with special screenings of “The Outsiders,” part of which was shot at the historic Route 66 theater.
The 1983 movie, based on the classic novel by Tulsa-area resident S.E. Hinton, will be shown Friday, Saturday and Sunday, reported the Tulsa World.
Tickets are $10 per person for “The Outsiders.”
A news release said one-of-a-kind t-shirts and souvenir cups will be given to the first 250 cars through the box office Friday, May 21. The cup can be used for $1 refills in the future.
“No matter what year, it will always be $1 refills,” said the news release.
Here are the scenes shot at the drive-in for the film version of “The Outsiders”:
Scenes from “The Outsiders” included several other Route 66 landmarks in Tulsa, including the Circle Cinema.
“The Outsiders” film, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, became notable for casting young actors who later became stars — Matt Dillon, Rob Lowe, Patrick Swayze, Tom Cruise, Emilio Estevez, Diane Lane and Ralph Macchio. Music legend Tom Waits also appeared in the film.
Folks probably owe themselves a visit to The Outsiders House Museum north of downtown Tulsa while they’re at it. The house, also used in key scenes of the film, was saved by House of Pain member Danny Boy O’Connor and converted into a museum that pays tribute to the film and novel.
The Admiral Twin Drive-In opened in 1951, and its second screen was built a year later. It sits off the older Admiral Place alignment of Route 66.
A fire destroyed the drive-in’s twin screens in 2010, but donations and public sentiment prompted its owner to rebuild and reopen in 2012.
