A new website is offering self-guided tours of historic landmarks in Tulsa, including Route 66.
Root Tulsa Historic Tours offers tours of the Greenwood District and Route 66 through the website directly or by scanning a QR code with a smartphone, according to a report from KTUL in Tulsa. It’s a partnership between Root Tulsa and the city.
Looking over the Route 66 tour, the website includes the Route 66 Village’s oil derrick, truck, trolly and Route 66 shield, Cyrus Avery Centennial Plaza, 11th Street Bridge, Avery Plaza Southwest and Crystal City. Each item contains a description, and the tour has an interactive map.
I found it, however, missing several vital landmarks — including on other alignments of Route 66 in the city. These include the Circle Cinema, Route 66 Rising sculpture, East and West Route 66 gateways and the Meadow Gold neon sign. I’m sure there are others.
Fortunately, organizers plan to add more points of interest to the website in the next two to three years.
The city says it has averaged 20,000 visitors on the website a month since May.
Root Tulsa also plans to work with the Tulsa Office of Film, Music, Arts and Culture to spotlight musically significant sites.

I can confirm – we are actively working on additional scripts and stops for Route 66 in Tulsa. It will continue to improve over time!
