Route 66 nominations encouraged for National Trust’s endangered places list

The National Trust for Historic Preservation is accepting nominations for its annual 11 Most Endangered Historic Places list, and the chairman of the Route 66 Road Ahead Partnership is encouraging stakeholders to nominate jeopardized properties on Route 66.

Bill Thomas, chairman of the partnership, stated in an email Tuesday that any Route 66 properties on the list would “help gain the national spotlight and enhance support for preservation of important sites along the Mother Road.”

But time is short to nominate:

Letters of intent are being accepted through November 12, 2021. From these initial letters of interest, the National Trust will invite a smaller group to come back in early 2022 to submit a full application.
The National Trust program has repeatedly drawn attention to Route 66 in the past. In 2007, Route 66 motels were on the Endangered List. All of Route 66 was listed in 2018. Most recently, the Threatt Filling Station and Family Farm located along Route 66 in Luther, Oklahoma was on the 2021 list.
According to the National Trust, the Endangered Places list has been so successful in encouraging preservation, that less than five percent of the 300 sites they have identified since 1998 have been lost. The National Trust is committed to drawing attention to unique or overlooked pieces of American history and that expand understanding of our national heritage and the full American story.

Anyone who knows of an important Route 66 site that could benefit from the national spotlight the 11 Most Endangered Historic Places program can provide, the partnership is encouraging a letter of intent.
