Tail O’ the Pup reopening in West Hollywood next year

The historic and iconic Tail O’ the Pup stand, famous for its hot dog shape, will reopen in 2022 in West Hollywood, California, along its stretch of Route 66.

LA Eater reported last week the stand, originally located at 311 La Cienega Blvd., will include a beer garden, as well:

The 1933 Group announced plans this morning for the return of the long-gestating stand sometime next year. What’s more, the group says they’ll be planting the stand at 8512 Santa Monica Boulevard along West Hollywood’s busy Route 66 stretch, giving a sense of timelessness back to the stand since it closed years ago. The 2,700 square foot property was for years a restaurant under the name Benvenuto Cafe, though old-timers will know the address as a former recording studio for the Doors and other famous LA acts from decades past.

The 1933 Group didn’t have a concrete reopening date but felt confident enough to announce it would occur next year.

The 1933 Group also owns the Formosa Cafe in West Hollywood, also along Route 66.

For more, Tail O’ the Pup also has its own Instagram account.

Designed by architect Milton Black, Tail O’ the Pup dates to 1946. Despite its unique look and its appearance in numerous movies, TV programs and commercials, it was threatened with demolition several times and was forced to move at least once. It closed in 2005 and was moved into a warehouse, according to Wikipedia. The 1933 Group purchased the stand about three years ago.

The City of Los Angeles in 2006 declared Tail O’ the Pup to be a cultural landmark.
