The Amarillo City Council on Tuesday approved painting a modified Route 66 shield on a huge water tower on Southwest Sixth Avenue (aka Route 66) near South Independence Street.
According to KFDA-TV in Amarillo:
Assistant Planning Director Emily Koller said, neighborhood boosters Historic Sixth on Route 66 and the San Jacinto Neighborhood Association raised eighteen thousand dollars for the photoworthy logo and some additional maintenance money.
The job should be finished by summer after the entire tower gets a paint job.
According to city documents, the 15-by-16-foot shield will use part of the Amarillo logo above the “66” part. They also state the emblem to last seven to 10 years, with a maintenance fund established by the neighborhood.
The city’s Beautification and Public Arts Board approved the proposal in September.
Here are some blueprints and other illustrations of the repainted water tower:
Right after the vote, Amarillo Mayor Ginger Nelson praised the project and suggested a ribbon-cutting type of event when the emblem is finished.
