The City of Clinton, Oklahoma, transferred its ownership of a distinctive 80-year-old fire station to the Clinton Industrial Authority, which in turn likely will sell it.
The building at 523 W. Gary Blvd., aka Route 66, changed hands during the city council meeting last week, reported the Clinton Daily News (subscription required).
“This is the first step in a multi-step process to probably consummate a transaction of the property to other parties,”
said City Manager Robert Johnston. “All this does today is give the property to the Industrial Authority which is the legal entity that could sell it in the days to come. We have had interest expressed, but we have no action to do any sales tonight. We will be getting the word out that it likely will be for sale.”
Johnston said the fire department has some equipment in the building that will need to be moved before it’s sold.
The stonework and unique look of the building undoubtedly will fuel plenty of intrigue from possible buyers.
According to the Route 66 Times, the fire station was built in 1939 as a Works Progress Administration project, though it’s not listed on the Living New Deal website that tracks such structures.
The city built a new fire station in 2014.
