The blaze prompted evacuations of the area and the closing of several roads leading to it, including Amarillo Boulevard (aka Route 66). Xcel Energy cut off power to the area for a time, and temporarily displaced residents sheltered at a church in Bushland, according to frequently updated reports from MyHighPlains.com.
No injuries were reported. The evacuation order was lifted before midnight, when firefighters brought the blaze under control.
The Amarillo Globe-News posted several images from the fire scene.
UPDATE: The headline and text have been corrected to west Amarillo, not east. Blame the lack of caffeine in the morning.
