New Route 66 sign installed at Tulsa Fire Station 66

Tulsa Fire Station 66 on the city’s east side recently installed a repurposed Route 66 sign there that lights up a night.

According to News on 6 in Tulsa:

Someone donated the new sign, to help boost tourism on Route 66.

Fire Chief Michael Baker flipped the switch on Thursday night and turned on the sign for the first time.

“Signs are an integral part of Route 66. It is one of the things people come to look at. Obviously, we have the sign area within the city of Tulsa on the west side, but it’s just, they have a long history, so putting a sign really affirms our connection back to the mother road,” said Chief Michael Baker, Tulsa Fire Department.

Fire Station four, which is also on Route 66, will soon have a similar sign.

The Tulsa Fire Department also released this video of the new sign:

The fire station also is part of the Oklahoma Route 66 passport program.

The fire station is near 145th East Avenue on East 11th Street (aka Route 66). In case you’re wondering about Fire Station 4, it’s in the downtown area.

The station in east Tulsa originally was called Fire Station 30, but it was renamed Station 66 two years ago to reflect its Route 66 roots.

The station has its own Facebook page here. It regularly hosts Route 66 visitors or tour groups.
