A long-planned Amarillo Route 66 emblem recently emerged on one of the city’s large water towers located just off the Mother Road.
Dora Meroney of Texas Ivy Antiques has posted a number of photos of the emblem on the tower, which is undergoing repainting:
The Amarillo Route 66 water tower even has its own Facebook page here.
Painting an Amarillo Route 66 emblem on the water tower was a joint effort over a decade by the Historic 6th Street on Route 66 Association, Old Route 66 Association of Texas and the San Jacinto Neighborhood Association. They raised $18,000 for the project and had to shepherd an ordinance change for it.
The 15-by-16-foot emblem should last seven to 10 years, with a maintenance fund established by the neighborhood.
The water tower is just off Sixth Avenue (aka Route 66) on the city’s west side.
