Neon signs from Westward Hotel of St. Louis installed at Transportation Museum

Restored neon signs from the long-defunct Westward Hotel in St. Louis recently were installed in the National Museum of Transportation.

A brief video of the signs was posted on the Tumblr account of museum director Terri McEachern. A screenshot:

The installation is inside the Earl C. Lindburg Automobile Center.

The Westward Hotel, which operated from 1953 to 1998, was at the junction of Bypass Route 66, U.S. 61 and U.S. 67 in St. Louis.

Here’s a vintage postcard of the motel, neon signs included:

According to the late Skip Curtis’ “The Missouri U.S. 66 Tour Book,” the motel was built by architect Bernard McMahon with 26 “luxurious,” western-styled rooms. McMahon, however, recalled his horror of having only one paying guest on opening night.
