A historic church in downtown Tulsa that once was part of the Christian Science denomination will be converted into a modern concert venue and recording studio.
GH2 Architects of Tulsa made the announcement this week on Facebook and included artist’s renderings of the transformed space:
The former First Church of Christ, Scientist at 924 S. Boulder Ave., on the corner 11th Street (aka Route 66), closed in October after more than 100 years in that location.
The church didn’t state a reason for the closure, but overall membership in Christian Science has been declining for decades. The Tulsa church’s congregation is looking for a new home.
The church’s Facebook page also confirmed the building would be converted into a concert venue.
According to an article a few years ago in Tulsa People magazine, construction for the church began in 1918. It was designed by Courtland Butler, who “took inspiration from Greek and Roman designs for the church’s grooved columns and iconic dome.” Its interior was renovated in 1935.
The building has changed little since that time.
