Amarillo’s only drive-in theater closes

The Tascosa Drive-In in Amarillo, Texas, closed last Friday after more than 70 years in operation, leaving a nearly 600-mile gap between operating drive-in theaters on or near Route 66.

The theater made the announcement of its closing just days before its final screening:

In a follow-up message on Facebook, the owners stated they were putting the property up for sale for $500,000, with priority to a buyer who wants to preserve the venue.

According to Cinema Treasures, the Tascosa Drive-in opened in 1952. One of its two screens closed in 1994 to make way for an RV park.

The Tascosa isn’t on Route 66, but it sits less than a mile north of the Amarillo Boulevard alignment of the historic highway. The next-closest operating drive-in on or near Route 66 is in Sapulpa, Oklahoma, or Las Vegas, New Mexico.
