The Route 66 Association of Missouri recently announced it is offering an exclusive black Route 66 license plate, in conjunction with the Missouri Department of Revenue.
The plate can be ordered online here. Once ordered, it will arrive in your mailbox in four to six weeks.
The association passed along this information about the plate:
- The plate can be used for cars, RVs, motorcycles and trucks up to 24,000 pounds gross vehicle weight.
- The plate can be personalized with up to six characters.
- Missourians who have a license plate now will have their current registration prorated.
- All Missouri plates in the vanity plate program are scheduled for renewal in July.
Here’s a tutorial about the plate from association President Rich Dinkela:
Lindsay Bagnall, treasurer of the association, stated in an email that $35 of the $50 fee would go to the association. She said an estimated $5 of that would go to pay expenses such as postage and printing the license-plate forms, but she was hoping it would be lowered to about $2.50.
“This is going to be a wonderful fundraiser for the Association to help restore Route 66 icons!” she added.
Several Route 66 states have a Route 66 license-plate program. The most notable is the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona’s, which has received so much revenue from sales that it has stopped taking membership fees and implemented a preservation grant program.

Too bad there isn’t a way to issue a ceremonial plate to out-of-state buyers. I would love to own a plate for display.
