Lindy’s Diner, a Route 66 landmark in Albuquerque for generations, will be put on the market on Jan. 1.
Co-owners Steve Vatoseow and his wife, Dawn Vatoseow, told the Albuquerque Journal they will put the Bliss Building, which houses the diner, for sale.
Lindy’s is at 500 Central Ave. (aka Route 66) in downtown Albuquerque.
“If we can find the right buyer, we’d like to sell out,” Steve said, adding that he hopes the building, located Downtown on the southwest corner of Fifth and Central, will be sold sometime in 2024.
Last December, they tried selling the building, but took it off the market in October due to a lack of “firm offers,” he said.
“So we kind of reevaluated what we wanted to do,” he said, “and it all (came) back to the same thing: it’s just time.”
Lindy’s website offered this history:
Just across from another historic landmark, the KiMo Theatre, Lindy’s began its life as Coney Island Cafe in 1929, making it one of the oldest continually operating restaurants on Route 66. In 1960 it was renamed Lindy’s Diner, but the classic dishes and vintage atmosphere lived on.
Lindy’s will mark its 95th anniversary next year. It has been used in movies and has served as an almost-mandatory spot for politicians on the campaign trail.
