The landmark Blue Swallow Motel of Tucumcari, New Mexico, landed the cover image of the current issue of New Mexico Magazine.
Not only does the Route 66 motel that dates to 1939 appear in the magazine’s lead article “The Magic of Route 66” and others in the issue, but so do Motel Safari and Roadrunner Lodge Motel of Tucumcari, El Rey Court and The Mystic in Santa Fe, Sunset Motel in Moriarty, El Vado Motel, Imperial Inn and Monterey Motel in Albuquerque, Sands Motel in Grants and El Rancho Hotel in Gallup.
The issue also contains a story about Route 66 motels that are closed or demolished, plus a story about other old-style motor lodges in non-Route 66 towns.
New Mexico Magazine is something of a historic landmark itself. It has been published for over 100 years.
