City of Albuquerque applies for $500,000 grant to build a Route 66 gateway on its east side

The City Council of Albuquerque recently approved an application to New Mexico’s tourism department for a $500,000 grant to build a Route 66-themed gateway on the east side of town.

The resolution notes the gateway would be similar to a west-side structure at 64th Street and Central Avenue (aka Route 66), and that the east side has no such gateway.

An image of the west-side gateway can be seen through this Google Street View image below:

If funding is approved, the east-side gateway would be just on Central just west of Tramway Boulevard off Interstate 40.

Wilson & Company Inc. Engineers & Architects in Albuquerque will develop the gateway’s design. The city’s share of the project would be about $26,000.

KQRE-TV in Albuquerque reported the city should receive an answer from the state on the application by July.
