A new but throwback-looking neon sign — with a Route 66 shield featured prominently — was installed Thursday for the forthcoming House of Speed shop at 610 S. Main St. (aka Route 66) in Joplin, Missouri.
Here’s a video of the sign being installed:
The sign was designed by Sign Brothers of nearby Pittsburg, Kansas, and installed by CDL Electric Co. of Joplin.
The House of Speed neon sign was installed where the Coulton-McGuire Millinery store once operated in the historic downtown district.
KOAM-TV reports that House of Speed owner Frank Naaykens wants to have it open by the end of this year.
House of Speed will offer Speed Dealer Customs, custom items for motorcycles, limited edition gear and Route 66 memorabilia. It also will have special motorcycles on display, including the owner’s 1977 Yamaha 125.
“House of Speed will become a destination of the many thousands of motorcycles who travel Route 66 every year. A place to connect with others who love bikes and have stories to share,” the station reported.
That part of Main Street in Joplin served as Route 66 from the 1930s to 1955, when the highway was realigned to Rangeline Road.
