Shortly before Christmas, the Big Willy’s Hot Dogs trailer in Chandler, Oklahoma, announced it would use a famous 1930 Phillips 66 cottage-style gas station for indoor seating at the restaurant.
Here’s the announcement by the restaurant:
Route 66 artist and author Jerry McClanahan, who lives in Chandler, stopped by that day to check it out:
The old station, albeit tiny, still would be a welcome spot to get out of the Oklahoma wind, rain, snow or other bad weather.
Shane and Sara Massie purchased the gas station, aka Westfall Station, in 2019 after the property went through foreclosure. Massie wrote he wants to restore the station further.
Route 66 Times reported the property at 701 Manvel Ave. (aka Route 66) at times was a Phillips 66, Skelly, Getty and Texaco station before finally closing in 1992.
Bill Fernau bought the station in 1999 and diligently worked to restore it to its original look, including the colorful tiles on the roof. It eventually was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011.
Fernau sold the property a few years ago and moved to Montana.
