Arcadia Lodge motel in Kingman deemed uninhabitable by city

City officials declared the Arcadia Lodge in Kingman, Arizona, uninhabitable last week after the utility shut off electricity to the Route 66 motel due to apparent non-payment.

According to a report last week in the Kingman Daily Miner newspaper:

City and county officials went door to door around 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, telling residents at 909 E. Andy Devine Ave. they had until 1 p.m. to leave. The shutdown came after several days without electricity, which was turned off on Monday, leaving many without working phones or internet to reach out for help or information.

According to City Manager Tim Walsh, the city was informed on Wednesday that the Arcadia was without power.

“First, we personally confirmed with UniSource that power had been pulled,” Walsh said, explaining that residential-commercial buildings are required to have electricity to meet building codes. “Without power, we went over and notified the property manager that the building was red-tagged – that it was not safe for occupancy.”

Long-term residents were funneled into the nearby Rodeway Inn, but with only a three-day guarantee. Local nonprofit organizations have been working to find those former Arcadia residents another place to live.

Whether the motel will reopen remained unclear. The newspaper’s reporters tried to talk to the Arcadia’s management, but the manager’s office was closed.

A perusal of online review sites of the motel — including this one by Yelp — showed it to be in pretty grim condition.

It wasn’t that many years ago, however, it was recommended in the National Historic Route 66 Federation’s now-out-of-print Route 66 Dining & Lodging Guide.

According to Route 66 Times, the motel opened in 1938, catering to upscale overnight travelers.

  1. Are you going to be posting updates on the Arcadia Lodge? How do I find out information on a motel like what fines they have been charged with? Who is the other owner(s) how many deaths has there been reported recently? Is Susan(don’t know her last name)going to be under investigation? She was also caught stealing electricity. I know because I was there when power got shut off. Please reply if you can. Thank you for your attention.
