About a decade after he purchased two historic hotels in Las Vegas, New Mexico, owner Allan Affeldt is putting both up for sale.
The Las Vegas Optic newspaper reported Affeldt wants to “pass the torch” to the new owners of the Castaneda Hotel and Plaza Hotel as he settles down.
Affeldt told the Optic that the properties will continue to operate normally as he works to sell both hotels, and that none of the current staff will be impacted by this decision.
The staff of the hotels were notified of the decision to sell on Thursday, Affeldt said.
Affeldt, who is now 66, said it was time for him and his wife to simplify their lives, as they have spent much of the past decade traveling between three locations, as he also owns properties in Lamy, New Mexico and in Arizona.
He bought both in 2014 when they had been closed for decades or needed serious work. He reopened Castaneda in 2019. Millions of dollars also were spent to upgrade the Plaza.
Bub Bergstrom of Cushman & Wakefield, a global commercial real estate company, will list the properties sometime this weekend.

The Plaza Hotel opened in the city’s square in 1882 and was called “The Belle of the Southwest.”
The Castañeda Hotel was built about 1898 by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. It was operated by the Fred Harvey Company until 1948.
Las Vegas sits a few miles from the Santa Fe Loop alignment of Route 66 and has become a common side trip for travelers.
