City of St. Louis to celebrate Ted Drewes Day on Friday

The City of St. Louis on Friday is officially recognizing Ted Drewes Day, in honor of the landmark Ted Drewes Frozen Custard stands.

On that day, the stand at 6726 Chippewa St. (aka Route 66) will offer 96-cent single-scoop cones or 96-cent single scoops of custard in a “hometown baseball team helmet” — presumably the St. Louis Cardinals.

Fredbird, the official mascot of the Cardinals, will make an appearance that day from 2 to 2:30 p.m.

The stand had more details here:

In case you’re wondering, the “96” is significant because the stand is marking its 96th year. It started in Florida in 1929, and moved to St. Louis in 1930.

The Ted Drewes Frozen Custard stand that opened in 1941 on Chippewa became the iconic site.

Also, longtime operator Ted Drewes Jr. died at age 96 in August.

Ted’s son-in-law, Travis Dillon, gradually took over the business as he aged. Dillon now is the co-owner, and Ted Drewes Frozen Custard will stick around.
