Bristow Historical Society awarded grant to restore Chrysler Plymouth tower sign

The Bristow Historical Society of Bristow, Oklahoma, announced last week it had been awarded a state grant to restore and relight the Chrysler Plymouth neon tower sign closer to Route 66.

More details from the society:

The sign is about 100 feet tall, and the society claims it would be the tallest freestanding sign on Route 66.

The grant was estimated to cover 70% to 80% of the moving and restoration costs, with the rest covered by donations.

Grover Hubert “Red” Beard designed the sign and installed it atop his 24-hour dealership one block from Route 66 in 1949. The sign went dark sometime in the 1950s.

Historical Society Program Director Joe Trigalet and his wife, Linda, previously estimated that moving the sign would take four to six months. That would put its completion in early 2026, Route 66’s centennial year.
