Route 66 shields being painted on New Mexico roads

The Route 66 Chamber of Commerce, based in New Mexico, has begun painting Route 66 shields on the roadway, including more obscure alignments like the one that runs south of Albuquerque to Los Lunas, according to the Valencia County News-Bulletin.

The road stencils can be seen here

The main reason the group is painting the shields on the road is because they can't be stolen. The highway department has erected "Route 66" signs in that area, only to discover most of them swiped within mere months.

"If you would've put out 20 signs in January, they would all be gone by March," Gilmore said. "With the stencils on the road, they're going have to jackhammer the things out if they want to steal them."

Gilmore said the chamber is hoping to have the stencils painted all along the remains of Route 66 within New Mexico. Moriarty will be the next community to have the stencils painted.

Personally, I'd like to see this program done for the whole length of the road.
