An online version of the plan on the city’s Web site says the goal is “to create a place that is identifiable for its unique Route 66 character, which can be a livable, walkable, mixed-use, vibrant economic and residential part of Albuquerque.”
In conjunction with the approved plan, six minor amendments also have been added, including improvements to “pedestrian and bicycle connectivity from north to south across Central, and more designated areas to legally cross Central, especially between Carlisle and Washington.”
So it sounds like the city remains committed to keeping its section of Route 66 viable. That’s yet another reason to keep El Vado Motel, which was slated by its new owner for destruction until the city and Route 66 advocates intervened. The fat of El Vado remains up in the air, but this development and El Vado’s “unique Route 66 character” can be seen as a positive.
