This recent PBS “American Masters” documentary about Doug Weston’s The Troubadour nightclub in West Hollywood, Calif., is one of the best things I’ve seen in a while.
The Troubadour helped launch the careers of Carole King, James Taylor, and a horde of other singer-songwriters during the 1970s.
And, yes, the Troubadour is right on the Route 66 alignment of Santa Monica Boulevard.
Watch Troubadours on PBS. See more from American Masters.
More than 50 years later, The Troubadour still operates as a live-music venue. Here’s hoping someone nominates it to the National Register of Historic Places, and soon. The total of its history and musical significance are every bit as strong as Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa and The Fillmore in San Francisco.
The ability to embed this video, by the way, is one of the reasons I made the move to a self-hosted site. WordPress.com, for all of its strengths, doesn’t allow it with many clips.
NOTE: If the video screen doesn’t show right away, refresh your browser, and it should appear.
