The Tulsa World reported this morning that the historic Meadow Gold sign, which has was dismantled in 2004 and placed into storage for safekeeping, will eventually find a new home in Tulsa just east of Peoria Avenue and 11th Street, aka Route 66.
Mark Farrell is donating a portion of the southwest corner Quaker Avenue and 11th for the project, near the Corner Cafe. The sign will be erected on brick structure that’s similar in appearance to sign’s original home on 11th and Lewis.
Claude Neon of Tulsa will refurbish the sign. An artist’s rendering of the renovated sign can be seen here.
There is no timetable on when the sign will be re-erected. But the fact a site finally has been selected clears a major hurdle. The sign is so big and heavy that finding a new place for it was going to be difficult.
The sign was dismantled and the building on which it sat was razed because a car dealership in the area at the time said it needed the space to sell more cars. The especially galling part about it was that the dealership moved to Broken Arrow, a suburb, barely a year later.
