The City of Edmond, Okla., has applied for a state grant that would build a bicycle trail along Route 66 to the west edge of Arcadia, Okla., reported the Edmond Sun newspaper.
Edmond has a bunch of bicycle plans on its radar. Among them is this:
And a trail will be constructed from the west side of Interstate 35 between 15th and Second Street. A trail will go under I-35 and go to Spring Creek Park at the lake, Fees said.
Fees said the city applied for an Oklahoma Department of Transportation Enhancement Project that would begin in the same area of I-35. This paved, 10-foot-wide multi-use trail would go up to Second Street in the right of way of the south side of Route 66 to travel east to Pops in Arcadia.
By my estimations, this would be a five-mile trail. I wish the trail would actually extend to the middle of Arcadia; this would be only a few hundred yards longer.
State Rep. Lewis Moore of Edmond also has joined with Mercy Health Systems COO David Tew to form a public-private partnership with the city to build a multi-use trail around Arcadia Lake, which is near Route 66, within two years.
Moore shepherded a bill last summer through the Oklahoma Legislature to create an Oklahoma Route 66 Bike Trail “contingent on funds available.”
That would be good. There are already many people who ride bicycles there, often riding out in the road. I’ve often came over a hill and had to do some fancy manauvering to avoid hitting one of them.
