The town of Tijeras, N.M., has approved an updated management plan for the Salt Missions Trail Byway, part of which includes Route 66, according to the Albuquerque Journal.
The newspaper reported:
It is an attempt to protect the histories, cultures and buildings along the Salt Missions Trail — the historic path that runs from Tijeras to Moriarty along Old Route 66, from Moriarty to Willard on N.M. 41, from Willard to Mountainair along U.S. 60, and from Mountainair back to Tijeras on N.M. 55 and N.M. 337. Loretta Tollefson, a special projects manager for the Mid-Region Council of Governments, said that because the resolution has been approved, the village will be able to request funds in the future for projects along Tijeras’ portion of the route. The council will also need to appoint a representative.
Tollefson said plans for the project include making a current brochure, creating a marketing “brand” for the entire byway, a once-a-year chance for everyone along the byway to sell and shop at a “pan-byway” yard sale, and a website to promote activities.
The Salt Missions Trail, which predated Route 66, was a wagon road tucked into the Sandia Mountains east of Albuquerque.
