Last fall, we reported that the small, Chicagoland-based Steak N Egger restaurant group had purchased Snuffy’s 24-Hour Grill along Route 66 in McCook, Ill.
Steak N Egger owner Terry Carr said the exterior, constructed in 1929 with limestone cut from nearby quarries, would remain visible, and that the interior would contain 1950s decor.
On Monday night, Carr emailed photos of the renovated restaurant:
“We tried hard to preserve its history with the road,” Carr said the email.
Alas, Snuffy’s old-time sign disappeared before the ownership change.
The family-owned Steak N Egger has operated in the Chicago area since 1955. One of Steak N Egger’s locations, at 5647 W. Odgen Ave. in Cicero, Ill., also is on Route 66.
This Steak N Egger, located at 8408 Joliet Road, will open April 16. Like its predecessor, it will be open 24 hours a day.
