Another Route 66 beer rolling into stores

Nick Trougakos, a writer for The Thirsty Beagle blog, posted this fascinating tidbit on Wednesday about Oklahoma City-based Mustang Brewing Co.:

Starting next month — on Nov. 1 — Mustang is set to roll out bottles of its next beer: Route 66 American Lager. Route 66 is a reformulation of the old Mustang Winter Lager. Taking the old Winter Lager’s place will be a new brew — an English-style winter warmer brewed with smoked malt and black-strap molasses.

According to Mustang’s own website:

Our Winter Lager seasonal went over so well in 2011 that we decided to make a year-round beer! Route 66 is a traditional, amber lager brewed with four types of barley, Hallertauer and Willamette hops giving it a crisp, malty finish.

The beer remains on tap in bars and restaurants in Tulsa, Stillwater, and the Oklahoma City area, but bottling the brew obviously gives it more distribution in the Sooner State and perhaps beyond.

I’ve liked the other Mustang brews I’ve quaffed in the past, so I remain optimistic this Route 66 beer will be a good one.

Enough beers or breweries are inspired by or on Route 66 exist that you could throw a tasting party. You have Mother Road Brewing Co. in Flagstaff, Ariz., and Mother’s Brewing Co. in Springfield, Mo. Rio Grande and Sierra Blanca Brewing Co. has operated for years in Moriarty, N.M. East Wind Brewing Co. should come online eventually in Staunton, Ill. And Route 66 Beer is starting to appear in the Kansas City area before going nationwide.

  1. And not on the road but I will throw in Dust Bowl Brewing in Turlock, too, since they are my favorite of the ones mentioned.

  2. I forgot to mention that on or adjacent to the road should also include Beaver Street Brewery in Flagstaff, Craftsman Brewing in Pasadena, Eagle Rock Brewery in Los Angeles, and Marble in Santa Fe, as well as quite a few others.
