The City of Williams, Ariz., is installing a second welcome gateway over the east end of Route 66, reported the Williams-Grand Canyon News.
The current gateway stands over Grand Canyon Boulevard, near Interstate 40. This one will be up in October, and cost no taxpayer money.
The (Arizona State Railroad Museum) donated two cantilevers, which BNSF had donated to the museum, and $10,000 for the project. Several other parties, including the city of Williams, APS and Grand Canyon Railway, also completed in-kind work on the project. […]
The new gateway will be installed on the east side of town where Rodeo Road intersects Route 66, said City Manager Brandon Buchanan. […]
Buchanan estimates the new archway will cost less than $20,000, paid for by a grant from a private donor. The money will pay for materials like steel and concrete, as well as assembly.
The gateway will be wider than the current one. The newspaper article didn’t have an artist’s drawing of the new gateway, but it presumably will be similar in design to the current one (pictured above), which remains a popular photo-op.
The city hopes to eventually install a third gateway on the west side of town.
