Frank Gifford at rt66pix.com informs me that a part of Oatman Road (aka Route 66) in western Arizona is closed for probably several weeks because of washouts from heavy rains.
The closed road begins at the “Y” intersection south of Oatman and extends from Mile 6 to Mile 22. The road will remain closed perhaps as late as October until it is repaired.
There is a detour on Arizona Highway 95, but Gifford says it nearly doubles the driving distance from Oatman to Topock.
Heavy rain has hammered Arizona and New Mexico in recent weeks, so this probably isn’t the only instance of flood-related damage or closures to Route 66. If you know of more, please let us know in the comments below.
The detour mentioned above is onto Arizona Hwy 95 which heads to Topock, not U.S. 95 which runs from Las Vegas to I-40 near Needles CA.
Thanks. Will fix.
It’s a little further to drive but it’s not a hard drive at all.
Thanks it is in my Route66 for tomorrow.
see the route an if there is a change I will report it back to you
Grants, New Mexico is experiencing heavy street flooding as well. I wouldn’t be surprised if the section of Route 66 about 10 east of Gallup is also impassable.
I would guess the closure we experienced traveling east bound on I-40 at Ludlow for the Ludlow-Amboy mileage of 66 stems from the same sort of weather occuring on the other side of the Colorado. Anyone know when that road might re-open?
