Carl’s Drive-In named one of America’s best

This story from KSDK-TV in St. Louis came across the Facebook feed today. It’s about Carl’s Drive-In, along the Manchester alignment of Route 66 in Brentwood, Mo.

Carl’s has regularly made the top 10 nationally among burger joints, including this recent list from Gayot.com.

In case KSDK’s video doesn’t load properly, you can see this slice-of-life of Carl’s from Rich Dinkela:

Norma Maret Bolin’s “Route 66 St. Louis” book contains a lot of interesting history about Carl’s. It initially was built in the 1920s as a gas station. After incarnations as the It became the Foot Long Hot Dog Company andthe Good Food Drive Inn, it became Carl’s Drive-In in 1959. Carl’s uses the original recipe to make its root beer, which reputedly became the basis behind the nationally distributed IBC Root Beer.
