Those of you who have traveled Route 66 in the St. Louis area probably noticed construction of the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge that will carry Interstate 70 over the Mississippi River. The unique cable-suspension design makes it hard to miss.
Rich Dinkela takes you behind the scenes on the bridge itself, where workers were close to finishing the connection to the Illinois and Missouri sides:
The Stan Musial Bridge will open in the spring.
The bridge obviously isn’t part of Route 66, but travelers probably will use it at some point to expedite their journeys. If nothing else, the bridge will relieve traffic on true Route 66 spans, such as the Martin Luther King Bridge and the historic McKinley Bridge.
As for why a big bridge would be named after a baseball player, this should help explain things.
