A clearinghouse of news and events about historic Route 66, the Mother Road.
Notes from the road
I got a call a few days ago from Bill Kinder, co-owner of the Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari, N.M., informing me that all of his motel’s neon lights have been repaired. The motel’s neon (and others along Route 66 in Tucumcari) were damaged this spring by a severe hailstorm.
Missouri Route 66er Tonya Pike says that Wrink’s Market on Route 66 in Lebanon, Mo., has reopened. It closed after its original owner, Glenn Wrinkle, died in 2005. But his son, Terry Wrinkle, has taken up the mantle. The market is planning a grand opening sometime in August.
A couple of blogs of note: The Wombat is driving slowly down Route 66 and is posting about it when he can get a good online connection. Also, Kathryn of Australia recently traveled on the Mother Road and reported about it on Gettin’ My Kicks.
This is off-topic but, hey, it’s my site: Emily and I have been working our way to have more of a solar-powered house. Today, at 11 a.m., the switch was thrown, our solar panels began generating electricity, and our electrical meter now is running backwards. You can read about our adventures and our journey to lowering our power consumption at the House of the Lifted Lorax blog.
That’s awesome news about the Blue Swallow Motel – we stayed there a week or so ago on our trip through; I was sad that the neon wasn’t there for my pictures, but we fully intended to stay there again, because it was awesome. Comfy beds, nice rooms, and the car fit neatly in the little garage. Highly recommended.
Glad to see that you picked up on the post I made on the yahoo e-group about Wrink’s Market in Lebanon, MO reopening. For the record, keep your ears tuned. Terry Wrink plans a grand opening around Labor Day … will try to keep you updated as I hear more. Terry and his mother hope everyone adds them back to their lists of “must-see” places on 66 …
