Here’s a heartwarming story by the Long Beach Press-Telegram about Project Love, a nonprofit group led by California Boeing employees to help impoverished children in the Navajo and Hopi Indian reservations in Arizona.
Volunteers annually bring toys to the Indian children around Christmastime. Here is a multimedia link by the Press-Telegram of photographs and audio commentary.
Even though the story doesn’t take place on Route 66, I put it here on the blog because the Navajos have always had strong ties to the Mother Road. Because of traffic on Route 66, many Navajos were able to make a living by catering to tourists, and still do.
Unfortunately the future of Project Love, which was started in 1963 by a McDonnell Douglas worker before the company merged with Boeing, is in doubt because Boeing is planning to close down a big plant and lay off a bunch of workers.
