The TripAdvisor travel community released its list of the world’s quirkiest motels, and a Route 66 establishment made the top 10.
At the No. 9 slot is the Wigwam Motel in Holbrook, Ariz.:
Its second year on the top ten quirky hotel list and with a unique price to match, the Wigwam Motel is a series of teepee-style cement tents along the legendary U.S. Route 66 that offers kitschy fun. A throwback to the 50’s with classic cars parked outside, an old railroad nearby and vintage accommodations inside the teepees, Wigwam is a great stop for travelers looking to step back to simpler times. According to a TripAdvisor traveller, “The Wigwam Motel is a unique retro motel, one of the few of its kind left in the USA.”
It’s the second straight year the Wigwam has made the list.
There are others of the same design: the Wigwam Motel on Route 66 in Rialto, Calif., and Wigwam Village No. 2 in Cave City, Ky.
Several years ago, my husband and I stayed at the Wigwam Motel in Holbrook, AZ and were thrilled to be in such a unique room. There was plenty of room and you almost felt like you were in a movie as the furniture, etc. was so like what you see in the western movies of the 40’s or 50’s. The tilted mirror in the bathroom took some getting used to, but what photo shots we got in and around the No. 10 Wigwam at the Wigwam Motel in Holbrook, AZ. It was one of the motel highlights of our trip!
My wife and I traveled Route 66 in June 2007. One of our must see places was the Wigwam Motel. We made our reservations months in advance to insure we’d be able to have the Wigwam experience. It was very unique in design but much larger than you would expect. Rustic and nostalgic with the vintage vehicles parked around the Wigwams. Another bonus was the reasonable price and a wonderful place to eat in Holbrook, Joe & Aggies.
Our family just stayed at the Wigwam in August, and it is quite an experience. The space inside is certainly not large, but it is a lot larger than you would expect when looking at the outside. My son loved the vintage cars, and the quilts and furnishings are great.
Unfortunately, our bathroom did not drain and there was no one on site to help! Also, those ancient gas heaters with the pilot light always burning should be disconnected. Combustion inside a room is not safe and no longer allowed by code. Other than that, sure, I would go there again on our next trip. And Joe & Aggies is the place to go for a “red or green” breakfast!
