‘Tis the season for ghost stories on Route 66, particularly with Halloween coming up.
I’ve heard most of them. But I stumbled upon one of which I was unaware in the Alamogordo (N.M.) Daily News in a story about a paranormal research group called the Southwest Paranormal Information Research and Investigation Team, or SPIRIT.
Apparently the team investigated reports of a spook at the Economy Inn in the Route 66 town of Grants, N.M.:
McCrary said the hotel is rumored to have a haunted third floor.
“Room 354 in particular is supposed to be haunted by the spirit of a murdered maid, and her screams can be heard at midnight on certain nights,” he said. “Also, the lounge has been frequented by shadow people in the wee hours of the morning when the bar is closed.”
The team set up their equipment and proceeded with the investigation, wrapping up about 4 a.m. and catching a few hours of sleep before heading back.
“The hotel was kind enough to let us sleep in at no extra charge so we could be fully rested for our trip back to Alamogordo,” he said. “This was by far our largest investigation to date.”
McCrary was asked what, if anything, the team found.
“That is a good question,” he said. “While there were some personal experiences felt my members of the team, we only count proven, collected data. We did indeed get data at one of the locations and can certify that it is haunted. That is the Double Eagle Restaurant in Old Mesilla.
“The Economy Inn may be haunted but we just didn’t get any data when we were there. It could be that the spirits were more afraid of us than we were supposed to be of them.”
wow never knew a hotel could be haunted but sure i’v seen scarier things
ok first of all before i get started, a friend of mine and i used to work there, i worked in the restraunt area and my friend worked 3rd shift front desk. now i have been up to the third floor i have also staied all night up in room 354 with Josh, my friend, looking for the ghosts. what we had found up there was not exactly “normal” for an empty floor of a hotel. in the middle of the night, about 2:30 3:00, there started to be loud screaming and thumping coming from the other side of the empty room that we were in. after the screams were not so loud and kinda creapy to be honest we walked out to the hallway where we saw a “shadowy figure” walk a little way down the hall and turn the corner into another room, we had figured this was the hells angel biker that went up there all those years ago to find his cheating wife so we followed and down the hallway a lil ways everything became cold as ice……. we went back to room 354, i still don’t know what was going on in that room down the hall but i also know the next time i get to go up there all night i will follow everything i see moving. Now.. as far as the kitchen, lobby and bar is concerned, we never really saw much of anything down there worth menchening but every morning when i went to work there was something always moved or altered, one morning the coffee pots were hanging on a couple of celing hooks, you know the ones for like plants n stuff. one morning all the chairs were in the back stacked up in a weird pile…. but we never saw “shadow people” in the lobby but that doesn’t mean they wern’t there…. you can believe this or not either way I know that it happened and i won’t ever forget my experience with the third floor of economy inn….
