Palms Motel in Needles is for sale

Palms Motel, Needles, Calif.

The Palms Motel of Needles, California, a historic property on Route 66 that features individual cabins amid towering palm trees, is for sale for $429,900, according to a recent listing on several real-estate sites.

The property was listed on Trulia.com about a week ago. It’s also on Zillow. According to the listing, the 16 units now are used as apartments. The agent is Craig Cole.

According to “Route 66: Lost and Found,” the Palms Motel’s cabins date to the 1920s, but they were moved from a spot on the edge of town to their current place during the 1930s. Guy and Orsavella Austin were the property’s owners during the early days.

It last served overnight travelers in 1997, when an attempt to convert it into a bed-and-breakfast operation apparently failed.

But I suspect, with the right owners and good maintenance, the Palms could thrive again as a retro motel operation. I know I’d want to stay there.
