It took longer than expected, but the city of Albuquerque last week began installing its new directional tourism signs inspired by a Route 66 shield and a roadrunner, New Mexico’s state bird.
According to KRQE-TV in Albuquerque, the sign installed in the Nob Hill section of town is one of six that will be installed on Central Avenue (aka Route 66) in the coming weeks, just before the beginning of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in October.
The sign was designed by marketing firm EFG Creative. The signs were projected to be up by late March.
According to the station, the project will cost $150,000, with a federal grant covering 80 percent of the cost.
