A 21-mile stretch of Route 66 in California’s Mojave Desert reopened Friday from Cadiz Road to Essex Road, reported the Needles Desert Star.
A large chunk of Route 66 in the Mojave closed in September 2014 after flash flooding damaged roadways and destroyed dozens of bridges.
The stretch from Ludlow to Amboy reopened in January after months of repairs.
The only stretch of Route 66 in the Mojave that remains closed is west of Ludlow, because of a washed-out bridge. That can be easily bypassed by the north outer road of Interstate 40.
It took 14 months, but it appears Route 66 in the Mojave Desert can be driven once again.
I drove this part already in September. Bridges where the not open but we drove next to them and had the road for us alone. Happty motoring for the people who will drive this again and let hope this time the opening is much longer.
