Head for the Hollandburger

The Victorville (Calif.) Daily Press says Emma Jean’s Holland Burger restaurant on Route 66 tends to be taken for granted.

But it’s not by European tourists and roadies who are traveling the Main Street of America.

Shawna Gentry and husband, Brian, are quick to produce the guestbook she keeps.

There are signatures and comments in Italian, German and French, among other languages, and mementos such as foreign currency that people leave as souvenirs for the Gentrys, who have been running the family business for 14 years.

Before that, Brian Gentry’s mother, Emma Jean, and her husband ran the place. […]

Hollandburger has been featured on the Food Network on “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives,” which has aired several times.

Photos of director Quentin Tarantino, who used the restaurant in his movie “Kill Bill 2,” decorate the south wall.

An autographed picture of John Schneider of “The Dukes of Hazzard” is next to Tarantino’s. The restaurant has also been used in a Verizon commercial, seen on the History Channel and featured on “Modern Marvels of Route 66.”

The restaurant’s been there since 1947. Of course, its celebrity status wouldn’t mean much without the food:

Moore and his brother order Petite Brian burgers, a half pound of meat on one-inch-thick sourdough. The burgers are so big the Moore brothers decided a smaller size.

“The house specialty is made-from-scratch biscuits and sausage gravy,” said Shawna Gentry. “We open at 5 a.m., but oftentimes there is a line of people waiting to get in that starts at 4:30 in the morning.”

  1. Having eaten at the Hollandburger MANY times I can attest to the fact that the food is great and the people who run the place even greater. To watch Brian and Shawna work a crowded lunchtime group could be titled, “Poetry in motion – roadside restaurant style.” The Brianburger is right up there with some of the other unique culinary creations to be found on Route 66.

  2. My wife Kris and I live in Wrightwood and frequently “drive down hill” to have breakfast or lunch at Emma Jean’s.

For breakfast we really enjoy their chicken fried steak and their pork chops are enough to bring a smile to Li’l Abner’s face…

For lunch I prefer their regular hamburger with a chocolate milkshake and fries–I takes me back….
