It took a day later than expected, but the Glenn Frey tribute statue was unveiled Saturday at the Standin’ on the Corner Park in Winslow, Arizona.

Hundreds of people — along with about an equal number of smartphones — attended the unveiling. It’s a tribute to the co-founder of the popular country-rock band The Eagles and co-writer of the band’s first hit song, “Take It Easy,” that delivered those now-iconic lines about Winslow.

Here’s a video from the festive scene shortly after the unveiling:

The bronze was delivered a day later than expected by TotalStatue.com because of weather problems en route from its home base of Utah.

The Glenn Frey tribute statue now stands a few dozen feet from the iconic Standin’ on the Corner statue of a 1960s troubadour musician.

The new statue bears a strong resemblance to the 1970s version of The Eagles’ co-founder, when he wore long hair and handlebar mustache.

Tom McCauley, a member of the Standin’ on the Corner Foundation board of directors, announced the creation of a Glenn Frey tribute statue in mid-August, with the help of KSLX radio and its Mark and NeanderPaul show, the foundation and the city of Winslow.

McCauley wrote he became inspired to commission a statue after an outpouring of sympathy at Standin’ on the Corner Park that followed Frey’s death at age 67 in January.

Frey and Browne collaborated on writing “Take It Easy” in 1972, which contained these now-famous lines:

“Well, I’m a standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona, such a fine sight to see,
It’s a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed Ford slowing down to take a look at me.”

The song reached No. 12 on the pop charts. It wasn’t the band’s biggest single, but it became a mainstay of Eagles concerts and road-trip playlists.

  1. well, my husband,my son took two days off work, and myself went up Thursday evening to make sure we’d be there for Friday sept. 23.and it was very disappointing. We were told that the driver had a heart attack and they had to find someone to drive it to winslow. I sure hope ya’ll had a great time .Came from Phoenix. Spent more money than I had anticipated at La Posada.

  2. No aviator sunglasses on his head, hair is lifeless, where’s “Ol Black”?? His eyebrows are all wrong.
    I was just there in May…….I don’t know…….I just don’t know

  3. I only saw a bad pic of the statue, but it didn’t look like Glen, I think Jack Tempchin should get some recognition also since he co-wrote a LOT of the Eagles tunes.

  4. Actually Jackson Browne wrote the Standin’ on the corner in Winslow Arizona line. Frey’s was the flatbed Ford bit. Hopefully nobody sues. Either that, or just say it’s a Jackson Browne statue.

  5. I work at a restaurant and met the man who made this statue, very interesting fellow and I’d honestly have to say, very good at his job, just thought Id share with all of you about the man who created the statue, btw he didn’t have a heart attack, the roads where bad due to winter

  6. In high school I drummed in a band with Glenn for a short time. The pictures of the statue doesn’t make me think of Glenn. It is a wonderful tribute to my friend regardless of who wrote the “lyric”. I just put Winslow on my bucketlist

  7. I always stop to pay tribute to the corner every time I’m near Winslow. It’s great to have another statue to pay tribute to. Thanks Winslow. You are truly forward thinkers.
